The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is expected to come out with a relief package for the telecom sector of India very soon. The government will look to reduce the financial burden on the telcos so that operators such as Vodafone Idea can have a future in the Indian market. The relief package isn’t final yet and the government’s still in the process of making it. According to the latest development from an ET Telecom report, the DoT might be looking to set up a panel or hire external consultants for preparing a relief package for the telecom sector of India. Here’s a few things the telecom sector is expected to get from the relief package.
Relief Package for Telecom Sector Might Include all This
As per the previous reports and the discussion going around the industry, the relief package for the telecom sector is expected to reduce levies such as the spectrum usage charges (SUC) and license fees (LF). Further, the relief package might reduce the AGR dues by excluding all the non-telecom revenues that the operators make. The government might also reduce or totally do away with the bank guarantees that the operators need to provide. This is all that’s expected from the relief package that DoT may introduce for the telecom sector. There might be a few more things in the package to make the life of the operators easier. There’s no guarantee when the government might come out with the relief package and further who will sit on the panel to make the package. Previously, the government had sought inputs from Deloitte and IIM-Ahmedabad for making the relief package for the state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). These consultations and inputs from professional bodies will help the government in coming out with the most effective relief package for the ailing sector. This relief package might make a difference in the survival or fall of the Vodafone Idea in India.
